Samenvatting

This report documents and presents the results of research conducted to develop an automated surveying data collection and processing system as defined in the objectives of National Cooperative Research Program Project 20-21. The Integrated Survey Information Management System (ISIMS) is a product of this study; however, guidelines are also provided to aid in developing other independent automated surveying systems by providing standard data formats for field and processed surveying data. Surveying system specifications and surveying features are given and a Universal File Format (UFF) is defined so that all systems may converge to a single formatting of the field surveying data for standardization of data exchange between the surveyor's field equipment and processing systems in the hope that manufacturers will be able to standardize interfacing and data transfer. The UFF contains the elements needed by design programs now in use by the transportation agencies. ISIMS was tested in Louisiana using a WILD/TC2000 total station with two different data collectors, the GRE-3 and SDC-HP71B. Computer programs have been written to list and plot the field data. It was decided that editing of the initial field data can best be done with the unique software existing on the specific computer being used. Examples, which have been tested and comply with ISIMS, are provided for most facets of surveying that ISIMS now addresses. Other surveying tasks can easily be put into ISIMS. All software has been documented.
