In the past 15 years automated information retrieval systems for science and technology have been developed at a remarkable rate. Today more than 1000 data bases are available for computerized searching. Although most on-line data bases contain bibliographic citations to the published literature, many data bases also provide numeric data that can be used to answer a specific question.
