Samenvatting

Automatic Vehicle Guidance (AVG) is deemed to be able to give a positive contribution to the quality of future road traffic. As policy makers are devoting an increasing attention to AVG and research activities concerning AVG are being intensified, the Traffic Research Centre (AVV) of the Dutch Ministry of Transportation has initiated a study concerning the desirability of an institution for joining forces in the field of AVG. For this purpose discussions were held with a number of organisations involved with AVG related research. Based on these discussions this report gives an overview of the views with respect to the future of AVG, the status of on-going AVG related activities and the opinions regarding the need and type of organisation for the coordination of AVG research. A combined symposium and workshop was organised to start the information exchange and to decide on the need for an AVG Task Force / AVG Plaform. At this meeting a joint decision was taken to set up a core team with the mission to draw up an AVG business plan, which is to be written and approved within a year. The business plan should guide the AVG activities and therefore it should contain a global vision, a strategy and the priorities with the corresponding milestones.
