In Sweden, large investments in the urban road network probably will be financed through tolls. Suggestions also exist to use road pricing in a traffic demand management system. Whatever the reasons are, a toll collection method is needed. This paper discusses the strategic selection of method and, describes the technology, with the trend towards electronic systems. The choice of system design depends on the motives - financing an investment, "general tax" or traffic demand management. Furthermore, the following factors have to be considered: (1) co-ordination with other RTI (Road Transport Informatics) applications; (2) the road environment where the system shall be implemented, and (3) integration with and (3) integration with other, national and international, road pricing systems.
