Samenvatting

The paper on Automobile Design in Relation to Passenger Safety by G. Grime of the Road Research Lab. comes form an organization, a large part of whose effort is devoted to research on road safety. The Road Res.Lab. is part of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and concerns itself both with the construction of roads and with their use. The paper was prepared in the traffic and Safety Division, where man problems of vehicle safety are being investigated. Notable contributions have been made to improvements in the non-skid properties of roads and tyres, vehicle lighting and signaling, traffic signs and the control of vehicles in emergencies. A symposium on the last named subject was held jointly with the Institution of Mechanical Engineer in June 1963 and aroused a great deal of interest. In the field of passenger safety, the Laboratory is undertaking a comprehensive programme of work, including theoretical and experimental investigations of the behaviour of seat belts, and full-scale vehicle crashes at their Crowthorne track. Much work has also been does in connection with British Standards for seat belts. Much of this work is described in a book recently published by Her majesty's Stationery Office entitled "Research on Road Safety".
