An automatic distance control in cars and lorries can prevent the number of rear-end collisions on motorways by up to 90%, and prevent bumper sticking which is considered to be the greatest irritation on the road. The technical systems are provided by five car brands (Volkswagen, Nissan, Mercedes, Audi, and BMW) for already more than a year. However, the introduction of this safety system in the Netherlands is lagging behind other countries. According to this article, (1) the opinions of the car industry are divided on the causes of this lagging, and (2) SWOV has not yet made an explicit statement, pending various studies of these and other safety systems in cars.
