The National Highway Safety Bureau approaches its accident reduction goals through the establishment of safety standards governing automobile and highway maintenance and design as well as drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Recent standards are outlined, and the bureau's crash phase concept is described. The efforts of the government are related to those within the automotive industry.
