This book focusses on the human factors and ergonomics issues which must be taken into account when designing passenger cars. The following key issues are covered: a) the human capabilities and limitations which are relevant to good car design (biomechanics, anthropometry, vision, motor skills and cognition); b) physical car design, which covers areas such as seating, occupant protection, and ease of entry and egress; c) design of dashboard displays and vehicle controls, and vehicle lighting; d) driver performance models; e) driver workload; f) the problems posed by older drivers; and g) computer aided ergonomics design. For abstracts of some of the chapters see C 2551 - 2571.
