Samenvatting

Automotive manufacturers have relied on new technology for vehicular lighting systems, to illuminate the road or to highlight overall appearance. Lamps are more than just a bulb and a glass lens. This paper explains optical engineering, and how it advanced lighting engineering. Technological advances are highlighted, including past (halogens) and current technology (High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)). What often goes unnoticed with new technology is its effects on consumers, mainly in higher repair rates. The paper explains how some Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have improved upon or reduced lighting costs, yet maintained the lighting system's ability to add value. (A)
