Automotive safety and the engineering materials sciences. Remarks prepared for the Society of Plastics Industry, Inc., 24th conference and exhibition, Washington, February 6, 1969.

After a general introduction in highway safety the goal of the NTSB to reduce traffic injuries and death is explained. To meet this goal the NTSB have identified pre crash, crash, and post-crash as the three principal parts of an all-outattach on the problem. At the same time progress in material sciences in regard to motor vehicle safety is discussed.
