Samenvatting

This Transportation Research Record contains six papers focused specifically on autostress design that were presented at the 1992 TRB Annual Meeting session Autostress Design of Highway Bridges, sponsored by the TRB Committee on Steel Bridges. Haaijer presents the historical background of early research on design concepts in this area. Moore and Viest discuss a large experimental model bridge test program sponsored by the American Iron and Steel Institute and the Federal Highway Administration. White and Dutta present results from finite element studies of bridge girder test speciments. A new method of analysis, which Schilling calls the Unified Autostress Method, is presented in the fourth paper. Wasserman and Holloran report on Tennessee's experience with autostress design: two structures in service and two others being designed. Grubb presents a review of autostress design encompassing concepts, a historical perspective, and the current state of alternate load factor (autostress) procedures.
