Developments relating to Automatic Vehicle Guidance (AVG) have accelerated in recent years. Not only as a result of the progress in technological developments, but also as a result of the efforts made in this area by large international consortiums. This report focuses on four systems that could become operational in the short term: (1) Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), commercially available in the Mercedes Benz S class; (2) Lane-departure warning system which supports vehicles in remaining within the road markings is commercially available on Mercedes Benz Actros lorries; (3) Stop & Go system which provides extensive support in congested traffic; and (4) External Cruise Control (ECC) which varies from providing information to drivers on prevailing speed limits from an external source to intervention in a vehicle's speed. The report includes recommendations to the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management on how these developments can be incorporated into the Ministry's stance on AVG. (A)
