Samenvatting

This report describes vehicle axle-load surveys carried out in Abu Dhabi and Qatar during 1970-71 using a new portable weighing system, and computer analysis of results. Commercial vehicle axle loads are related to their damaging effect, vehicle type, commodity carried and direction of travel. It is estimated that the heaviest vehicles in Abu Dhabi and Qatar with axle loads of the order of 20 tonnes cause deterioration of the road at an approximate rate of £11 per 100 vehicle kilometres compared with a rate of £1 per 100 vehicle kilometres if axle loads were reduced to UK legal limits of 10 tonnes.
