Samenvatting

The transition from rural area to built-up area often does not correspond, in the perception of the road user, with the actual demarcation designated. The development of sustainable safety has had a significant effect on the selection of site and design of area boundaries. Within the concept of sustainable safety a division of categories has been put together which distinguishes three types of roads: through road, distributor road and access road. In practical terms this leaves five types of area boundary. Based on the concerns about problem areas highlighted and the division of road categories within the concept of sustainable safety a program of requirements has been formulated for the boundaries of built-up areas. The program of requirements has been crystallised into a practical step by step plan which has been included at the back of the publication in the form of a fold-out spreadsheet. Within that process the following (main)steps are covered: determine whether or not an actual built-up area exists (and where it starts); determine the exact location of the area boundary; determine the type of boundary; determine the design and layout of the area boundary; and study of the remaining design requirements.
