Samenvatting

The problems with current vehicle identification techniques are outlined. Vehicle identification is often based on optical imaging of the vehicle followed by manual or automatic reading of the registration plate. The location of the camera, environmental conditions and the font of the registration plate can all cause problems. An electronic licence plate provides the existing vehicle registration mark in an electronic form. Electronic vehicle identification (EVI) could also include information on the vehicle identification number, vehicle dimensions, fuel type and vehicle classification category. EVI applications are discussed with reference to identification, payment, vehicle data, enforcement, and value added services. The implications of EVI for data protection and privacy are considered. Commercially available EVI systems are described. For the covering abstract see ITRD E115762.
