Samenvatting

The author suggests that the new generation of intelligent vehicle highway systems aimed at improving safety may be less effective than hoped if the concept of risk compensation is taken into consideration. Research on the subject has shown the negative effect of improved vehicle technology. A number of examples are listed. The psychology of the driver's response is discussed. A study of such adaptive behaviour to be undertaken in East Germany during the improvement of old slippery road surfaces is outlined.
