Samenvatting

The aim of this research within the ADONIS project (EU) was to (A) Assess a theoretical model of attitudes; (B) Determine how we can motivate people in different cities to switch to a more environmentally friendly mode of transport C) Discuss how we can better plan for non-motorised modes of travel. 354 participants from Amsterdam, Barcelona and Copenhagen took part in this study. An extended version on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) was applied including questions about: attitudes, social norms, perceived control and habit. Respondents were asked to rate questions about a short trip, 2.5 km, starting at their own home. In addition to the above a travel diary was used to provide data on different aspects of travel including: number of trips taken, trip purpose, length, time of day together with characteristics of the traveller themselves such as age, gender and vehicle occupancy. The same respondents took part in the attitude study and in the travel survey. Based on the results from this study several suggestions were presented with the aim of substituting short car journeys by walking and cycling.
