Samenvatting

This document contains the proceedings of the ninth annual seminar on behavioural research in road safety. These seminars are supported by the UK Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR); they aim to encourage the exchange of ideas between behavioural researchers in the UK and abroad, and review the progress being made in behavioural research in road safety. The 24 papers presented at the seminar probably had a wider range of topics than at previous seminars. The emphasis continues to be placed on new drivers, young drivers, and driver training, but there are also four papers about older drivers. One paper in this group is about accident mechanisms in novice drivers. There are three papers on company car drivers, a topic discussed for the first time at these seminars. There continue to be papers on driving ability impairment, drink driving, and drug driving, and there is also a paper on whether daydreaming affects road safety. Several papers concern the attitudes and behaviour of drivers. The engineering topics covered include road design, speed limiters, and brake lights. For abstracts of the papers see C 15118 - C 15142.
