Samenvatting

The research method applied is based on the verification of theoretical knowledge about traffic and the functioning of ageing people through an experiment. In this experiment the elderly offer their own opinions about the quality and safety of `sustainably safe' traffic measures. The study method was established to be workable and produced valid statements. It appears that `sustainably safe' traffic measures currently applied in practice also offer a considerable safety improvement for older pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, when compared to the former situation. However, for these elderly road users, the predictability of behaviour of other road users and/or the self-evidence of the code of behaviour they should practise themselves in certain traffic situations is crucial. Elderly road users appear to have problems under certain circumstances regarding their perception of the road course and steering activities. The `drawing pin', the traffic hump with deflected cycle passage, the axis deviation, and the intersection plateau should be critically reevaluated. In contrast, the roundabout seems to be positively rated. The general conclusion is that with the current strategy for a `sustainably safe' infrastructure, no `separate' measures for elderly road users need to be applied, although certain application forms may require some adaptation to better suit elderly road user.
