This paper describes a proposed training programme for qualified drivers to introduce them to the skills and practice of good driving. Elements of the programme included classroom lectures and examination of a stationary car; laps of a primary driving course, with and without an instructor; and laps of a reverse course. Areas pinpointed as exercises were to determine the car's boundaries, and the minimum U-turn possible; to practise lane changes and the use of the Automatic Braking System (ABS); to implement backing and driving on curves; and to negotiate a slalom course. Most drivers were inexperienced in the use of ABS. The author found that a considerable amount of time had to be spent on the stationary car examination, and that written manuals were needed.
