Samenvatting

Vehicle wear refers to mechanical components whose wear may be assumed to be due to road surface irregularity. Irregularity causes variable ground contact forces which create internal vehicle movements and forces. Internal movements cause wear between components, leading to failure. Failure however normally occurs due to fatigue. For two roads of different degrees of irregularity, service life of vehicle is inversely proportional to RMS value of dynamic wheel loads to power q where q is material dependent. Reasonable value is q = 6. Wear is also dependent on RMS value of road profile. Knowledge of significance of road environment for vehicle wear is limited and further research is necessary.
