As is indicated in the National Policy Paper on Transport (SVV II), improvement of traffic safety remains one of the main fields of interest of the Dutch national government. By formulating an ambitious improvement program ('Sustainable safety') it is planned to reduce the lack of traffic safety drastically. This program can be characterised by its integral approach. Measures geared at reduction of the accident risks are combined with measures that aim to realise shifts in network use and modal choice (aiming at a considerable reduction of the growth of car mobility). Until now, it has not been possible to calculate the impacts of changes in the mobility pattern on traffic safety. The introduction of the Traffic Safety Module of the Mobility Explorer should overcome this shortcoming. In this paper the most important features of the Traffic Safety Module are discussed.
