Samenvatting

An overview is given, on the basis of a literature review, into the psychological background to incentive systems, whose aim is to improve driving behaviour by effective incentive and safety stimulating programmes and the possibilities of the adoptation of such programmes by industrial organisations. Besides theoretical considerations the use of the programmes in practice is outlined. It is concluded that the payment for safe behaviour in traffic does pay in many cases. The incentive should not be so big that the driver is only motivated extrinsically, but also not so low that it is not attractive for the driver. The incentive should be given regularly, for example once in two years, and should be a fixed part in the policy of the organisation and not given as an once only payment. The programme should be supported by motivation, knowledge and skills from the drivers. Therefore it can be considered for publicity on road safety, driver training and selection of new drivers.
