This study has collected data from Australian state and regional road and tourism authorities on their levels of interaction when deciding on road investments and the impact on tourism. The findings of this survey are similar to those reported in 1998 by the United States Transportation Research Board, that is, whilst tourism data is widely available and used in the regions (notably tourist activities, demographics of tourists and the use of accommodation facilities), there is not a strong link between the use of that data and road investment planning and strategies. This study has also reviewed current models for measuring economic impact of investment activity in Australia. It is found that Input-Output modelling provides a readily understood and easy to use method for estimating the total regional economic impact of tourism, including the impact on all related industries. The success of the model is determined by the quality of the regional data available for analysis, data which could be readily sourced from the regional tourism and road authorities throughout Australia.
