Bicyclists made up 54-80% of all passenger travel in key urban areas in China in 1993. In some cities the growth rate of bicycling was 5-14% per year. Bicycling quadrupled in key Chinese cities from 1980 to 1993. It bicycling is to continue to give China a competitive edge in pricing its goods; bicycles, and all other vehicles and pedestrians must continue to move, and move safely. In central urban areas, bicycles are so numerous that they tend to set the speed and capacity for many intersections. Thus additional research to improve bicycle traffic flow in the urban environment is one of the most important tasks for traffic engineers and traffic managers for the near future. This article discusses the safety advantages of roundabouts.
