Samenvatting

The Danish accident records reveal that a significant number of cyclists are involved in traffic accidents. The figures show the total number of persons injured in accidents reported by the police and, including, the number of fatalities. To these figures should be added a large number of slightly and also to some extent severely injured persons in bicycle accidents not recorded by the Police. Research has shown that the actual number of cyclists treated at hospital after an accident is about 10 times the figures. Bicycle transport in Denmark, measured in bicycle kilometres, amounts to approximately 5% of the total personal transport. In the following table you will find the amount of daily transport per person aged 16-74 years, by different modes. The figures are taken from the Danish Travel Survey in 1992, based on 6423 interviews in the age group 16-74 years. Given the accident figures and the figures on person kilometres transport, the accident risk by different modes is calculated. In order to meet the problem of unreported accidents" "dark numbers", the risk of accidental death and severely injury is calculated. (Author/publisher)
