Samenvatting

75 out of 100 people indicated that they felt the use of seat belts should be mandatory. Of those questioned, belt users were clearly more in favour of a mandatory ruling than non-users. It appears that attitudes of belt users were not affected by injuries incurred. The attitude was not significantly changed whether the accident occurred in urban or rural areas. 46 out of 100 drivers used belts at the time of accident according to statements given. The use of safety belts was greatest in rural areas. According to the investigation, 80 out of 100 passenger cars in use on Norwegian highways have belts installed. Installed belts are less frequently found in older automobiles, but the data do not support the statement that it is impossible to install belts in old cars.
