Samenvatting

The Nuremberg public transport operator Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nurnberg (VAG) is to set up the first automatically operated metro line in Germany. Progress with the project is outlined. The partners in the project include Siemens Transportation Systems, Adtranz and Neuer Adler. The existing U2 (Nuremberg Airport-Roethenbach) will initially have automatic and conventional trains running together. The new U3 line (Gustav-Adolf-Strasse-Maxfield) will have fully automatic trains from the start. This is because the two lines will initially share track. Plans for new trains are outlined. An automatic surveillance system will detect the presence of objects or people on the track. Closed circuit television will be used to monitor the space entered by trains next to platforms. The phased implementation of the metro automation system is outlined.
