In view of the repeated request made by the public lately to install modern traffic regulation plants which would considerably reduce jams, accidents and loss of time, the author's statements give an idea of since when, why, how, under what difficulties, and with what results such plants, which have been constantly brought to up date, have been installed in the Federal Republic of Germany over the past few decades. The article, however, makes also clear that in this intricated and difficult field considerable efforts from a technical, operational, legal and, last but not least, financial point of view, as well as the constant cooperation of traffic and police authorities are still required, before a solution which could be considered ideal according to modern ideas will have found its general realisation.
