Large sums of money have been spent to maintain the road pavement in a serviceable condition. In order to economise on maintenance cost, efforts are being taken to understand the pavement behaviour under Malaysian climatic condition and to address the pavement problem according to the modes of distress. The common causes of pavement distress in this country are cracking caused by reflection cracking from the existing pavement and age hardening of the bituminous surfacings. Rutting is not a major problem except in highly stressed areas. Extensive research has been carried out by the Public Works Institute Malaysia (IKRAM) to understand the pavement behaviour in this country. Some early findings from the country. Some early findings from the research work are discussed and presented in this paper. (A)
