In a lecture to some members of the Cape Town Branch of the S.A. Institution of Civil Engineers some recommendations were made on the selection and implementation of road alterations to reduce accidents so as to ensure maximum benefits from limited resources. Some characteristics of accident occurrence and of road alterations were given, e.g. how accidents tend to cluster at certain locations, accident patterns vary from locality to locality, some types of alteration can result in either fewer or more accidents. The problem of which location should be improved and what alterations should be made can be approached in a systematic manner through the appropriate use of accident data and estimates of cost-effectiveness of possible road alterations.
