Muenchner Flughafen GmbH, the operator of Munich's Franz Josef Strauss Airport, Germany, commissioned Siemens to install a monitoring system for the multi-storey car parks and underground garages of the airport's Terminal 1. Siemen's Sipark parking guidance system was already installed at the airport's Terminal 2. An ultrasonic sensor will be mounted above each parking space to detect whether the space is occupied or not. The sensors are fitted with light emitting diodes (LEDs) that signal the occupancy status. Green means the space is available, red means that it is occupied and flashing red means that it is reserved. Occupancy data is passed to the central car park management system that communicates with a guidance system via optic fibre cables and Scalance Optical Media Converters. Drivers are guided to unoccupied spaces by the shortest route by dynamic LED display panels. The system prevents too many drivers from being guided into a sector where only a few spaces were free. The information from each parking space is evaluated in the multi-storey car park guidance system.
