Samenvatting

Monitoring of friction between tyre and road is one of the key issues for the detection of driving environment and therefore for future driver assistance systems. The system developed by BMW Research for on-board detection of friction is described; it gains its value out of the utmost importance of friction for overall driving dynamics. From this importance the benefits of such a system for all concerned with driving dynamics can be deduced. Starting with the use of friction for driver information and warning by an appropriate man-machine-interface, leading over its use in modern vehicle dynamics systems up to complex driver assistance functions, it is suggested that on-board detection of friction will form a basic information for the ultimate driving machine of the future.
