Samenvatting

Body protectors are intended to reduce the risk of soft tissue and spinal injuries to horse riders. Simple tests of current products between flat rigid anvils show that they are too thin to be effective in preventing soft tissue injuries. Assessment of the protection of the spine is more difficult because of its flexibility. The best protection is given when there is a plastic skin of high bending stiffness over the foam layer; however this design may restrict the mobility of the rider to an unacceptable degree. Further development of the products is necessary.
