Costs of traffic crashes 2003-2009: property damage, human losses, and settlement costs. Road traffic crashes are responsible for large social costs, and information about the extent and development of these costs is important for road safety policy and for policy research. On request of the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management, SWOV investigated the development of three different cost items during the period 2003-2009: settlement costs, property damage and human losses. This study is input for a topical estimate of the total cost of traffic crashes, also including the other costs caused by traffic crashes, i.e. medical costs, production loss, and costs due to congestions. This report will only discuss the three cost items that SWOV investigated.
