This article describes vehicle speed limiting devices available in the UK, both in-vehicle and road-based, and other safety devices. New European-based regulations from January 2007 require passenger vehicles with eight or more seats, and goods vehicles over 3.5t, to have speed limiters fitted. These must conform to the relevant standards, and form part of the UK's MOT roadworthiness test. Versions available include the ability to switch to a lower set speed for different conditions of use. Vehicles registered after 1 January 2005 can be retrofitted with a device. At the roadside, traffic signs are being used which inform the driver of the speed done: these have been found to be successful in reducing speeds. A device which contains a camera in a road stud can be used to identify offenders. Speed humps and road kerbing can be made of recycled plastic. Detectors can be fitted to road crossings which cancel crossing lights if a pedestrian moves away without crossing.
