The report begins with a review of current rehabilitation and strengthening policies, with special reference to the financial and economic aspects and to experience gained with the use of comprehensive inspection systems in member countries. It then describes, in detail, the state-of-the-art of repair and strengthening techniques. Perspectives for future rehabilitation and strengthening poloicies are outlined, and the concepts and tools for developing a general policy are presented. The report ends with recommendations for research and the Group's general conclusions. The study highlights the need for sustained efforts to preserve the existing bridge stock, and develops broad policy guideline for bridge rehabilitation and strengthening.
