Risk analysis is applied to the assessment of bridge inspection condition reports to prioritise a maintenance program constrained by a limited amount of available funds. Risk is defined as the product of probability of failure and the consequence of that failure, and priority is based upon an ordered ranking of risk. Qualitative risk analysis is used initially to set a tentative time frame to reflect repair urgency. A typical risk matrix is defined. Semi-quantitative risk analysis is used to prioritise repairs within the time frames set by the initial analysis. Factors defining probability and consequence categories are provided with guidelines to assign values to those factors. Priorities are established from a risk ranking of candidate projects. The procedure has been developed for a network of 250 bridges with sample outputs included. The procedure is not limited to the number of bridges that may be analysed, and the procedure may be adapted to suit particular client requirements. (a)
