This paper describes enforcement of certain traffic safety measures in the UK. Seat belt wearing is compulsory although not easy to enforce, but has achieved a high level of compliance. Motorcycle helmet wearing is also compulsory and has high compliance, although cycle helmets are not compulsory. Drivers are tested on suspicion of drinking or influence of drugs, and can be fined and banned from driving. Fatigue-induced driving problems are difficult to prove but are attracting more publicity. Speeding offences are largely detected by cameras and penalties enforced: this measure has less acceptability by the public.
