Samenvatting

Detailed information about the numbers, types, and characteristics of British postbus services is reported. Postbus operations are varied in character, but services can be categorised according to a limited number of basic types. The results of surveys of examples of the different forms of operation are recorded, and the work of some other researchers is reviewed. It is found that postbuses can, in general, provide practical passenger services which are acceptable to their particular patronage. That patronage consists mainly of women, and pensioners, with no alternative transport, making local trips for basic purposes (such as shopping or visits to doctors). the type of operation most appropriate to this patronage is discussed.
