This report contains a justification of the choices made during the preparatory phase of a meta-analysis of the relation between road surroundings and traffic behaviour. It also describes the studies that have been included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis is part of the theme ‘Road users: the relation between behaviour, surroundings, and accidents’. This theme is, among other things, aimed at obtaining a better-founded insight into the extent to which, and the way in which, the traffic behaviour of road users is influenced by features of the traffic surroundings. In the present meta-analysis, the effect of road markings on the speed and lateral position of motorised traffic is studied. On the basis of the research subject and the appropriate definitions of road markings, driving speed, and lateral position, the available empirical studies were collected. A total of 41 relevant studies was traced. The information from these studies was collected systematically by using a coding list. The most important features of these studies are described both in the report itself and in the appendices. In the following phases of the meta-analysis, the features of the studies will be analysed further. Using analysis methods such as HOMALS, regression analysis, and variance analysis, the following questions will be answered: what is the effect of road marking on the speed and lateral position of fast motorised traffic (cars, lorries, vans, motorcycles) and to what extent do surroundings features influence the scope of this effect. The results of these analyses will be described in the final report of the present research project.
