This paper considers how the contracting industry can assist the Government’s implementation of the New Zealand Transport Strategy. This strategy was launched in December 2002 and is about creating a sustainable transport system. The paper considers the goals of the strategy and discusses possible options for the contracting industry to achieve them in the way it physically builds and maintains the networks. Recent initiatives and current practices that support the strategy are identified and discussed as are future opportunities. Discussion centres around the purpose of the strategy and its goals, namely economic development, safety and personal security, access and mobility, public health and environmental sustainability. Obstacles to moving possible opportunities forward, such as funding and procurement procedures, are discussed with recommendations suggested for overcoming them.
