Samenvatting

This paper describes a study which considered the contribution made by buses to the economic well-being of city and town centres, the benefits to local economies and the effect on congestion of improving bus services. Literature on the subject is reviewed and changes in planning policies on out-of-town shopping noted. Five case studies are described which reflect the situation in a range of UK urban areas - Aberdeen, Hemel Hempstead, Ipswich, Sunderland and Swansea. A variety of data were collected including information from a bus users questionnaire. Possible future scenarios are modelled. Public attitudes are discussed in particular towards bus priority. The author suggests that a continuing desire for town centre facilities will reinforce the importance of the bus.
