This paper presents the results of study into the potentials of pipeline systems for inland goods transport in the Netherlands. A survey has been made of the supply and demand sides of goods transport by pipelines. Some figures are given with regard to energy consumption and emissions of pollutants by pipeline systems. It is concluded that pipeline transport is a relatively important mode of goods transport in the Netherlands, especially in the Rijnmond area. The possibilities for strenthening its modal share in Dutch national and international goods transport, however, are very small. (A)
