The characteristics of bullock cart haulage are described and the estimated profitabliity of operating bullock carts based on data collected from surveys conducted in 1977/78. The paper concludes that while the basic design of the bullock cart has changed little over time, and could well be improved, it is easily maintained and well suited to its role in satisfying the demand for goods trasport at the most local level and in small unit loads. Details are given of the types and quantities of commodities carried and trip distances, speeds and tariffs are reported. (Author/publisher)
