Combined transportation of goods on industrial sites. The transportation of goods on industrial sites and business parks is, for some goods at least, not organised efficiently. In this light, the combined transportation of goods offers interesting possibilities. For these possibilities to become reality, several conditions should be met. First, the goods must have the same origin and destination, be of similar type, and make use of the same loading units. Second, the companies involved should not consider transportation a core activity. Third, a collective body representing the individual companies on industrial sites and business parks is recommended. Park management organisations on business sites are especially qualified for the job, and are considered a great advantage. A good starting point is the combination of generic goods: i.e. goods that are being transported by virtually any company. A basic calculation shows that with only the combined transportation of goods in the parcels and express category, a reduction of 90 mln to 350 mln vehicle kilometres is possible in the Netherlands (around 1-3% of the annual total for delivery vans). This equals a 20 to 80 kiloton reduction in CO2 emissions. (Author/publisher)
