Samenvatting

The author considers the ways in which conventional public transport can be adapted for use by the elderly and mobility-handicapped. Special reference is made to the Service Route operations in Sweden for the more severely disabled. A number of bus design alterations are described which were carried out to a Scania Model CN 112 CR bus in Malmo involving, in particular the middle door, but also the front door and interior. The Service Route concept is explained - special route layouts, timetables and smaller buses adapted to the needs of elderly and disabled people. The criteria to be met by a Service Route vehicle are listed, and the Ontario bus, which was found to fulfil these requirements, is described in more detail. By 1990 around 40 cities are expected to have introduced Service Routes.
