This paper outlines two studies undertaken by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) for the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR). The first involved assessment of the effects of two major bus priority schemes, in Aberdeen and Brighton between 1993 and 1995. Here, the authors summarise TRL's findings and compare the results with those of other schemes in the UK, as reported by relevant Local Transport Authorities or consultants acting on their behalf. This indicates the current status and effectiveness of major bus priority schemes around the UK. A theoretical assessment of the scope for bus priority in a range of locations which currently have few, if any, priority measures is described. This second study included detailed examination of a selection of congested bus routes to determine where bus priority measures might have most impact on delays to buses, and used modelling techniques to estimate benefits to bus operators and passengers, and any effects on modal choice.
