Samenvatting

The South and West London Bus Priority Demonstration Project, started in 1991, examined the whole lengths of six routes noting the places where congestion caused delay and unreliability. Bus priority measures were then designed to protect buses from congestion. Many of the schemes have now been implemented, and substantial improvements have taken effect. Annual surveys to monitor the effects of measures have been carried out on this route from 1992. This has included monitoring of bus and car journey times, bus reliability, bus frequency, passenger attitudes to the changes and patronage. Lessons learned from the results of this exercise may shape local authorities approach to improving the performance and the image of the bus.
