Samenvatting

A recent innovation related to the public transport scene in Sydney is the development of a bus rapid transit network. The first phase of the project known as the Liverpool to Parramatta Transitway commenced operation in 2003 and the paper presents an analysis of benefits of the intersection priority technology adopted in this project. The analysis presented in the paper is based on data collected from 103 bus runs and shows there are significant travel time benefits to passengers. More importantly, the analysis shows there are reduced system costs to the operator resulting from the reduction of number of buses and drivers required. Quantification of benefits attributable to upstream detectors at priority signals is main purpose of this paper. Brief comparison with overseas case studies is also included.
